Performance of CuBert™
The Bert Thin Films, Inc. team demonstrated highly efficient cells utilizing the CuBert™ copper paste at both our facility in Louisville, Kentucky, and at independent sites. Testing confirmed that CuBert™ can achieve efficiencies exceeding 24%. When compared directly to silver pastes, its performance is near identical.

The CuBert™ paste can be screen printed using conventional screen printers equipped with screens that are standard in the industry. Most existing solar cell manufacturing plants can print CuBert™ with their existing tooling. Fine line printing has been successfully demonstrated with CuBert™ using screens with 20 micron openings.
Following printing, the cells undergo drying and subsequent firing in an IR belt furnace, utilizing a profile similar to that of silver. The firing profile is depicted in Figure 1. Due to CuBert™’s unique properties, the copper contacts do not oxidize despite processing in clean, dry air. After the firing process, the cell undergoes further processing through Laser Enhanced Contact Optimization (LECO), just as silver products would.

Figure 1. Example of firing profile of the CuBert™ pastes.
The M10 cell achieved an efficiency of 24% as shown in figure 2, yielding similar results to silver paste as shown below. Of note is a measured J0 value of just a few fA/cm² indicating strong contact to the silicon.

Figure 2. Example of M10 TOPCon cell printed with CuBert™ with an efficiency of 24%.
In a subsequent experiment, CuBert™ and Silver pastes were printed, fired, and LECO processed for a comparative analysis. The outcomes indicated that the performance of the M10 cells exhibited remarkable similarity, as depicted in Figure 3.
